Prolactin is a stress hormone that increases due to mental and physical stress. Prolactin enables women to breastfeed after birth by activating milk production. A prolactin value above the normal range can lead to infertility by suppressing ovulation. Very rarely, prolactin levels close to 0 can occur due to hypofunction of the pituitary gland.
